Golf cart or low-speed vehicle?

Florida treats these as two different vehicles. A golf cart tops out at 20 mph and may only use roads that are designated for golf carts, with a posted limit of 30 mph or less.

A low-speed vehicle has a top speed above 20 mph and no more than 25 mph. It can use any street with a posted limit of 35 mph or less, as long as it is titled, registered, insured and driven by someone with a valid driver license. Zebra carts are sold as LSVs.

What Florida requires on a street-legal LSV

• Headlamps, tail lamps and stop lamps
• Front and rear turn signals
• Reflex reflectors
• Exterior mirrors, plus an interior or passenger-side mirror
• A parking brake
• A windshield
• A seat belt for each seat
• A vehicle identification number (VIN)

Zebra carts come equipped as LSVs with a VIN. Owners also need personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) insurance.

Getting your cart on the road

• Buy your Zebra and get the title documents from us.
• Buy PIP and PDL insurance for the cart.
• Title and register it at your county tax collector's office and get a license plate.
• Drive it on streets posted at 35 mph or less.

Some cities, HOAs and gated communities add their own rules about where carts can go and where they can park. Check with yours before you drive.

Questions

Do I need a driver license to drive an LSV?

Yes. Florida requires anyone driving a low-speed vehicle to have a valid driver license.

What insurance does a street-legal golf cart need?

Florida requires personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) coverage on a low-speed vehicle. Ask your insurance agent for an LSV policy.

How far can a Zebra go on one charge?

The Breeze 4L goes 50 to 60 miles. Models with the 51.2V 230Ah battery go up to 80 miles, and the Terrain 6 Pro goes more than 80 miles. Range depends on passengers, terrain, speed, weather and battery age.

Florida rules summarized from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles low-speed vehicle guide. Check flhsmv.gov for the current requirements.
